(RE)DEFINE Exhibition by RIOT Collective for the Brisbane Art Design Festival

‘For we too did these things in our…youth’ (fr.24)

BRISBANE, QUEENSLAND - KEPK

The title of this work comes from fragment 24 of Sappho’s fragments in David Campbell’s Greek Lyric, Vol. 1: Sappho and Alcaeus. With the theme of this exhibition concerning the redefining of queerness and identity, I wanted this series to exude nostalgia and authenticity. Without straying from what I feel is true to my own fluctuating expression, I have subtle balances of masculinity and femininity in the styling of this shoot; from the bloomers and bent knees to the blazers and stern postures.

I wanted this series to curate that feeling you get when you find an old picture of your grandparents and you realise their youth, beauty, style, and love. Taking this notion further, I wanted to pay homage to the queer people who have come before us, no more than one or two generations before us, who’s love and identity was much less celebrated and certainly documented.

This series features myself and my partner Clare, who I could not have brought this idea to life without. In sharing my approach to expressing or redefining identity, it was important that I kept this series as close to myself as possible - and so, these three images really are us in all our youth, beauty, style, and love - and I couldn’t be more grateful or proud.

I would like to thank Liv for organising this event and allowing me to partake.

I would like to acknowledge that this series was curated on the unceded land of the Turrbal and Jagera people.
